Administration of antenatal corticosteroids to pregnant women with imminent delivery of a newborn at 24 to 34 weeks of gestation represents one of the most important advances in perinatal medicine in the past 25 years1,2. We report a case of pneumonectomy for CPL in a newborn. An infant girl, born at 39 weeks' after an uncomplicated pregnancy, exhibited respiratory distress 1 hr after birth, which necessitated intubation and aggressive ven...

متن کاملPulmonary effects of prolonged oligohydramnios following mid-trimester rupture of the membranes--antenatal and postnatal management.
Mid-trimester, preterm prelabour rupture of the membranes (PPROM) with prolonged oligohydramnios remains a challenge for both obstetricians and neonatologists. Although survival rates have improved, morbidity remains common particularly due to pulmonary insufficiency and pulmonary hypertension. The aetiology of abnormal lung development is unknown but may depend critically on pulmonary vascular...

The pathology was reviewed of the early deaths identified from the first 50 neonates treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during its introduction to the UK. Fifteen neonates died during or shortly after ECMO between August 1989 and June 1992. Data on 12 are presented (three did not have a postmortem examination).
